Once Upon A Hit | The Supermen Lovers – “Starlight”

Once Upon a Hit: A Series Taking You to the Heart of French Electronic Music’s Greatest Hits

The French Touch celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and French electronic music continues to captivate audiences and ignite dancefloors worldwide. Following a year marked by the success of the Olympic ceremonies, which showcased renowned French electronic artists, the awards won by the documentary dedicated to producer DJ Mehdi, and the rise of a new generation of talents (Irène Drésel, Rone, Kompromat), What the France—the music recommendation platform from the Centre National de la Musique—teams up with Clubbing TV, the leading HDTV channel for electronic music, to present Once Upon a Hit. This six-episode serie delves into the creative secrets behind some of the most iconic tracks of the French Touch movement.

Episode 1 : The Supermen Lovers – “Starlight”

In the first episode of this exciting new serie, What the France meets Guillaume Atlan, also known as The Supermen Lovers. A devoted funk musician, Atlan transitioned into electronic music and sampling in the late ‘90s after discovering Daft Punk and The Chemical Brothers. When he told his mother about his dream of leaving university to pursue music, she asked him to do so outside her home. That’s how he moved into a tiny apartment, where he composed the now-legendary hit “Starlight”.

Released on February 14, 2001, “Starlight” became an instant classic, featuring a quirky animated music video with a potato-like character resembling its creator and an irresistible funk-infused rhythm. Built around a sample from “The Rock” by East Coast, Atlan added drums, played the now-iconic bassline, and recorded vocals with his friend Mani Hoffman in his bathroom. The track skyrocketed to success, selling 2.5 million copies and topping the dance charts in over ten countries.

Still amazed by the global enthusiasm surrounding this emblematic track, Guillaume Atlan shares his early experiences, inspirations, and amusing anecdotes in this exclusive interview. In an intimate setting, he opens up about his creative process and the impact of his hit song—a track that continues to transcend generations and fill dancefloors, proving that some melodies truly are timeless.
