Deluxe is a six-piece French live band—featuring a female vocalist—rooted in pop, funk and hip-hop, the group was born in the streets of Aix-en-Provence. They are instantly recognizable by their signature moustaches (which the female singer famously sported as a skirt) and the “cul-stache” logo that adorns their entire discography.
While the current lineup dates back to 2010, the story of Deluxe began in 1994 when Kaya (bassist) and Kilo (drummer) met at age six and became lifelong friends. Kilo met their guitarist and pianist, Pietre, at Rocher-du-Dragon middle school, and the two began playing together. Kaya later met Pépé—a saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist—at the Darius Milhaud Conservatory, as well as Soubri—a percussionist, photographer, and videographer—in an applied arts class at Cézanne High School. In 2007, the five musicians from Aix abandoned their respective studies to pursue a shared dream: making a living from their music. They rehearsed daily and built a studio in Kaya’s parents’ garden, all while performing on the streets of Aix. They even went so far as to establish an association called “Deluxe Événements.”
In 2010, they met Liliboy, a fine arts student and babysitter who recognized them from repeatedly passing by their impromptu street performances—stroller in hand. Together, they recorded “Pony,” an electro-swing track that earned them an appearance on the TV show “Taratata” and became a global hit. Around the same time, they met Chinese Man, a collective from Marseille riding high on the success of The Groove Sessions—the first album released on their own independent label, Chinese Man Records. The collective mentored and advised the up-and-coming group, producing Polishing Peanuts – the EP that introduced Deluxe to the world in 2011- and later releasing their debut album, The Deluxe Family Show, two years later. Eventually, the band launched its own label, NANANA Production, in 2015. Driven by a desire to own their music and co-produce their tours, Deluxe embraced independence, following the example of the label that had taught them the ropes. All album artwork, the vast majority of music videos, and their social media visuals and content are created in-house by the band members, who champion self-reliance and minimize the use of intermediaries. Their costumes – including the famous “mustache skirt”- are crafted by their friend Luana Poncet (Oie Studio).
In 2016, the album Stachelight was released, featuring collaborations with -M-, IAM, and Nneka : artists who were major influences on the band. Producing music and performing live with their idols at the Olympia was a dream come true thanks to this record, which also included the global hit “Tum Rakak.” In 2019, Deluxe released the album Boys & Girl, followed by Deluxe en confinement (2020) and Moustache Gracias (2021). In 2024, after performing at numerous festivals large and small, the mustache-clad group launched the inaugural Super Moustache Festival in Aix-en-Provence, the very place where it all began. Celebrating live music with an eclectic lineup carefully curated by the band, the event was a success, drawing nearly 15,000 festival-goers. The following year, the group released their seventh album, titled Ça fait plaisir. Last June, they unveiled two new remixes of their tracks “Jason” and “Michael,” created by their friend, the artist Senbeï.
Deluxe will wrap up 2026 with a string of international dates: fans can catch them performing in Belgium (Seraing, Oct. 29), Luxembourg (Oct. 30), Germany (Hamburg, Nov. 11; Munich, Nov. 12; Berlin, Nov. 14; Cologne, Nov. 15), the UK (London, Nov. 18), Hungary (Budapest, Nov. 24), Bulgaria (Sofia, Nov. 26), Macedonia (Skopje, Nov. 27), and Romania (Bucharest, Nov. 28). For the occasion, the group has curated an exclusive playlist for What the France, featuring some of their made in France favorites.
