Michèle Bernard was born in Lyon in 1947. She began her career in theater, but quickly turned to singing. She chose the accordion as her accompanying instrument. She participated in the events of May 1968, and her life has been marked by involvement in social struggles. Her solo career began in the 1970s. Her realistic style evolved towards a more intimate and sometimes political register. She has won the grand prize of the Académie Charles-Cros three times. She currently lives in a former textile factory in the Loire region, a place that inspires her and which she has turned into a cultural meeting space.
